who

Richard Stacy Aumonier, artist b.1965. M.A. sculpture (RCA93). British, Huguenot name.

what

Studio images - a fragmentary record of recent work, full catalogue available on request. Since 2003 I have worked with commercial granite surplus in London, mainly 30mm slab otherwise destined for landfill, more out of fascination than strong ethical stance. A process naturally developed. To find, sort, cut and calibrate, bond and build became necessary and sufficient. I work with what's available, mixed up remnants of strange mineral hue and often unworkable character, exploring grain and juxtaposition.

why

I find the process a compelling source of sculptural enquiry, full of metaphor. Works here are small but I'd like to really engage this resource, transform and put it back into the world. I extend an invitation to other artists, designers, architects and developers to collaborate to that end.

how

Using a technique called sandwich bonding, prepared slabs are joined with a formulated epoxy. The use of epoxy is minimized by grinding very flat, calibrated surfaces and the hard stones give the bond integrity. Stones of the same type are bonded into blocks and these become concrete elements to combine with others.
